The Musical Hunger Games: American Idol

I had every intention of recording a video log about this topic but alas my flipcam went to video heaven. I've tried everything under the blue moon but it won't turn on. That is why I'm writing my thoughts down instead of verbalizing them in an awesome video. Since the topic was originally intended for video purposes it will be split into two parts. You probably guessed by my blog title that I will be talking about the cultural phenomenon known as American Idol. If not, don't be too hard on yourself the title was pretty vague.

I've been fan of American Idol since season two. I have not watched all the seasons because I was living abroad at the time. My favorite winner is Kelly Clarkson because of her catalog of music. It's crazy to think she was discovered on a talent show.  When it comes to who I actually saw perform on the Idol stage , David Cook hands down is my all time favorite. Other contestants that I have loved are Elliott Yamin, Haley Reinhart and the adorable Phillip Phillips. Now that we have aced the history lesson, let's dive right in the topic at hand.

I was little skeptical of this season because I would be saying goodbye to judges I had grown to love. No longer would I hear Jennifer telling someone she could punch them because they were so good. No longer would I see Steven's euphoric expression after someone hit that right note. I was not happy when they announced they would be four judges. All the other times they were four judges the chemistry was always off between the judges. Once the show began to air once again the judges lacked chemistry. I believe this is the main reason viewership has gone down. When two judges avoid each other that is not good TV.  Good TV is when judges can have a healthy debate and can still be friends afterwards. They have excellent banter and it's not a poisonous environment. Whomever came up with this panel needs to sort out their priorities.

This season is also the most manipulated season I have ever seen. From scripted standing ovations to clear favoritism just gives me a headache. Which is a shame because this season had the most talented bunch of kids I've ever seen. Everyone had something to offer. The eliminations that hurt the most for me were Burnell and Devin because of their untapped potential. Devin's voice was like butter and Burnell had the most unique tone. Why the judges failed to save them will be the death of me.  I loved watching the transformation of Amber. I hope she gets the right people to manage her career. Maybe she should release an EP of standards prior to her debut album. I also liked Janelle. She had a great attitude and after watching a few interviews she is one smart cookie. Her performance of You Keep me Hanging On was one of my favorites of the season.

Last week we lost the fan favorite Angie. I was not shocked that Angie did not make it in the Top 2. I always felt she was going to be the surprise elimination. I never was a huge Angie fan but I admit she surprised me with her vocal prowess. Particularly in the group number she did with Candice and Amber. I never really got why the judges insisted she stay behind the piano. I thought some of her better performances were without the piano. Regardless she is going to have a great career outside of the show.

Now onto Part two- Battle Royale
