Don't You Want me Baby? Apparently Not
Five black girls enter a club, scratch that five black girls can't even enter a club. Does this sound problematic to you? Does this sound like a beginning of a joke? I wish it was a joke but I learnt last Friday that even in the 21st century shit like this still happen. I'm not going to lie when things like this happen it hurts and it is completely confusing. I was in a state of shock but the more I thought about it the more pissed off I got. Even as I sit down to write the blog post my mind is going in a different direction. It does not like being in a state of negativity, so it is taking me a longer time to write than if I were to write about my increasing love for Alphabeat or how I party hard on tumblr. I think this is an important topic so I am going to continuing to write about it even if it takes me all night.
On Friday evening my older sister arranged for a group of her friends to go to Covet, a lounge in midtown Manhattan. I arrived early and waited in the restaurant section with one of my sister's friend until the lounge opened. The hostess was extremely lovely and informed me that the lounge had opened. It is really important that you remember how nice the hostess was to me because its important to the story. There were free drinks at the bar and it was a cozy feel. There were not many people down there. The crowd was predominately a mix of white men and Asian women. There were a few black men I saw but they were either came alone or with group of non black non Hispanic people. We sat down and waited for the rest of the gang to arrive. I got a few looks from some of the people working there. I wondered if I was not dressed appropriately since all the girls were wearing dresses that barely covered their asses. I must have missed the memo because I was wearing jeans and a nice top. About ten minutes later we received a text message from my sister saying she was outside but they were giving her grief. I just assumed it was the taxi driver because I had no problems getting in. We waited for five minutes before my sister sent a text saying she was not allowed to come in. I was confused because my sister was put on the list so she should have been allowed to get in. I asked one of the people working there if there was a time when no one was allowed into the lounge , they looked at me like I had three heads. They were as confused as I was and promised they will find out what was going on. Once they went upstairs they never came back down. Eventually I went back upstairs because they were not letting my sister and four other girls in. The entire group was composed of black females. Some reason the bitch with list( which she was) saw a group of black women and decide that they will be a problem for the club. Because you know black women are nothing but trouble.
So here is what went down. My sister and two of her friends arrived to the lounge. There was no line, people were just walking in once they spoke to the BWL. Some of them were not even on the list but I guess they were what the lounge was going for. So my sister told her that she was with the promoter but the woman did even look at the list and denied her access. She did not even look at the list, you are going to just determine someone can't be on the list without looking at the list. Afterwards once BWL realized that my sister was on the list she changed the story saying something happened with the list. It was lies after lies. The bouncers were confused about why she was not letting the group of girls enter the lounge. Even one went into find out what was going on. When he came back he looked like he had been slapped and he could not look at us in the eyes. At this time the group had increased to five black females excluding myself and my sisters friend who were in the lounge at the time. It is important to note that when I arrived the BWL was not at the door, so i assumed the person giving her difficulty was the hostess i met. When me and my sister friend went to get card for the lounge so we can contact the manger, everyone was acting sketchy. They all of a sudden did not know the last name of their boss. It doesn't matter we are going to report you fools anyway. I mean they could not even look in our eyes and all look so dumbfounded . I just wanted to shake them and say snap out of it. It really was terrible start to what ended up being a great night. So a word of advice don't go to Covet. THEY DON'T LIKE BLACK PEOPLE. I really hope this post blows up so the people at Covet look like idiots which they are.
