Kony 2012

Earlier this week there has been a viral video about Joseph Kony done by Invisible Children. I have seen it exploding all over Tumblr and Twitter. I decided to watch the video and I recommend that you watch it as well. Here is the link for the video http://youtu.be/Y4MnpzG5Sqc.
I appreciate the effort because it is bringing attention to an important issue however, it is flawed because it does not give the full picture of what has happened and is happening on the ground. One of the major issues of the video is that it uses footage from when the war was still going on in Northern Uganda. I understand why the footage was used because it tags at your emotions and it forces you to act.

When I watched The Invisible Children movie seven years ago( the first documentary) I was driven to act. I purchased the DVD and showed it anyone who would watch it. Now there are actual initiative to rebuild the community that was devastated by the war. The truth is Kony is not even in Uganda anymore, he was exiled over six years ago. There are rumors that he is somewhere in the jungles of Congo. As I said before I respect them because their objective to capture Kony is an amazing and admirable. I hope that they achieve their goal because he is a terrible man. I just wished that they would have not simplified the issue. I was not going to speak about this topic because I wanted to discuss Women this month. However, I came across a video created Rosebell Kagumire that gives a response to this video and speaks more eloquently than I could. She knows more about the issue than I do anyways. She is my Female of the Week therefore I still am talking about women this month.
