Your Voice, Your Choice: Elections 2012
In 34 days the political storm will come to a head in The United States of America. All I can say is Hallelujah! It has been a long time coming. Seriously, I am experiencing election fatigue. Even though I am exhausted I know how much is riding on this election. I feel that this general election is more important than the one that took place four years ago. The global economy being what it is there has never been a better time to have leaders with the country's best interests at heart. If you have been watching what has been going on in the nation's capital, you know that it is a mess. There has never been a better time to make your voice heard. Every vote counts and your vote could be the difference between a bleak future and a promising future.
The most important step of voting is registering to vote. In the next couple of days the registration deadlines will have passed. Make sure you do not miss your deadline. Rock The Vote has a great section on their website about registration deadlines. You can also find your polling location( where you vote), what to bring to vote and registration qualifications.
The second most important step of voting is being an educated voter. Do your research, make sure you know your candidates. Find out who is up on the ballots and whether or not their plans for your community best serve you. It is important to remember that this election is more than a presidential election. There are House seats up for grabs and very important Senate races as well. There is fantastic tool on Your Vote, Your Voice website called candidate finder. There you can just enter your address and get a list of candidates that will be on your ballot. I find it to be an extremely helpful tool. League of Women Voters is also a great resource as well. Contact your local chapter if you have any questions about the upcoming election.
To learn more about what the presidential candidates have to say make sure your check out the debates. First one is tonight at 9 pm EST. Here is the complete schedule for Presidential debates this month.
October 3: First Presidential debate- domestic policy (University of Denver)
October 11: Vice Presidential debate (Centre College)
October 16: Second Presidential debate (Hofstra University)
October 22: Final Presidential debate-foreign policy (Lynn University)
The final step in voting is making sure that you vote. Know the times of your polling place. If you have to fill out an absentee ballot, make sure you get it postmarked on time. Encourage your friends to vote as well. Get out there and make your voice heard. Happy election season everyone!
